What to Expect From Your Teeth While You’re Expecting

Posted .

Pregnancy comes with a whole set of hormonal changes, but what you may not know is that these hormones can affect your dental health. Brushing your teeth and consistently flossing can help you avoid any serious issues, but you may still be at risk for other issues. Here are a few serious changes concerning your teeth that you should to be aware of while pregnant.

Gingivitis and Periodontitis
While you may have never had problems with your gums before pregnancy, the hormone changes you’re experiencing increase your likelihood of developing gingivitis, and eventually, periodontitis. Because of this, it’s extremely important to give your teeth and gums special care during your pregnancy.

Tooth Decay and Erosion
If you suffer from morning sickness, you may be more prone to cavities and tooth decay. Because acid wears away the enamel on your teeth, you should take the time to brush your teeth and gums after every bought of morning sickness.

Loose Teeth and Swelling Gums
It may come as a surprise, but pregnancy hormones can affect the ligaments and bone that hold your teeth in socket. Because of this, your teeth may become loose during pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones can also increase the amount of bacteria found in your gums, which can increase swelling and irritation.

It’s a great idea to consistently brush and floss your teeth while you’re pregnant to try to avoid dental issues, but sometimes these things can happen.
